AS EARLY AS THE 16TH CENTURY... The MELLOT family was already living to the rythm of the vine. The Mellot family started to grow vines in the Sancerre region in 1513 and steadily built up a such a reputation over the following generations that, in 1698, Louis XIV chose César Mellot to be his viticulture advisor. In 1881, Alphonse Mellot opened an inn in Sancerre where he showed a real flare for marrying the foods and wines of his native soil. In Paris in 1846 Alphonse-Edmond Mellot opened one of the first ever wine bars which helped to spread the fame of Sancerre considerably. In the heart of the capital, artists, writers, actors and journalists would frequent the place to drink…in moderation… Today, Alphonse Mellot father and son, respectively the 18th and 19th generation to bear that name, keep up the family traditions. AND NOW... In 2000, the Area of the Moussière is still marvelously located on hills surrounding the village. The wealth of its soil reflects on the quality of the wine. The particularity of this soil is the "caillotte": thousands of small limestone which reflect the sun's rays on grape's clusters. A natural alliance that one does find nowhere. The heart of France seems to have been made for it. The Sauvignon vine appreciated particularly this type of soil. Alphonse Mellot produced on his own "Domaine" white, rose's and red wines.
